As the director of the Balin Eye & Laser Center, ophthalmologist Nancy Balin, MD, FACS, of Western Massachusetts is committed to creating a full service facility which provides the highest quality, most technologically advanced medical care to the residents of Hampshire, Hampden and Franklin counties. The Balin Eye & Laser Center is located in Northampton, Massachusetts. We have satellite offices in Springfield and Ware for the convenience of our patients.

Dr. Balin performs LASIK eye surgery in her state-of-the-art laser suite. Dr. Balin's vision corrective surgical specialties include LASIK, CustomVue™, CK®, Refractive Lensectomy, cataract surgery and iLASIK™. She has been providing precision eye care to the greater Springfield area and all of Western Massachusetts for more than a decade.

The state-of-the-art laser suite at the Balin Eye & Laser Center features precision technology including the VISX Star S4 laser, the WavePrint system, CustomVue™ with Iris Registration® and the Intralase Femtosecond laser providing “no blade, all laser LASIK”.

More surgeons throughout the United States and worldwide use VISX lasers to perform laser vision correction than any other laser. The VISX Star S4 laser used at the Balin Eye & Laser Center is the latest generation VISX laser offering the most advanced and sophisticated technology. A key feature of the laser is the 3-D eye tracking system. The tracker follows even the tiniest movements in the eye in all 3 dimensions to ensure pinpoint accuracy for optimal outcomes. The laser is also equipped with variable spot scanning technology allowing the surgeon to customize the size of the beam to treat only the areas needing treatment while conserving corneal tissue.

WavePrint technology brought a new level of precision and accuracy to the procedure. A WavePrint is a diagnostic test that is able to measure and capture the unique imperfections in a patient’s vision and download the information into a treatment map. This WavePrint map can then be transferred into the VISX Star S4 laser allowing the surgeon to customize the procedure to the specific needs of the patient. WavePrint technology is used in performing CustomVue™ laser vision correction. CustomVue™ is a more precise form of LASIK offering the benefits of better night vision and greater clarity of vision both day and night.

CustomVue™ laser vision correction from VISX is now available at the Balin Eye & Laser Center with Iris Registration. Iris Registration is a new fully automated method of aligning the CustomVue™ treatment to the eye during the procedure. In the past, the surgeon was responsible for marking and aligning the eye for torsional rotation during the procedure. Now with Iris Registration, the laser can more accurately align the treatment to the eye. Accurate alignment is essential to provide the best possible outcomes.

The Intralase Femtosecond laser used at the Balin Eye & Laser Center presents a 100% blade-free approach to laser vision correction. The technology allows the surgeon to tailor make the flap based on what’s best for the patient. The laser creates the flap using light pulses as opposed to a mechanical blade. Intralase has treated over 500,000 eyes worldwide. Dr. Balin is among a small group of practices offering this advanced technology.

For those patients who are too nearsighted for a LASIK correction, Dr. Balin implants the Verisyse™ Phakic IOL. The IOL is positioned in front of the eye’s natural lens and works like a pair of glasses in the eye restoring clear vision.

CK® is available for patients who have good distance vision but only need glasses to read. CK® is a blended type of vision that eliminates or greatly reduces the need for reading glasses following the procedure.

For those patients with cataracts, Dr. Balin performs no stitch cataract surgery using Crystalens™, the only fully accommodating lens implant and the ReSTOR® and ReZoom™ multifocal lenses. In most cases patients who receive these new multifocal lens implants will not need glasses to see distance, intermediate or up-close objects following the procedure.
