Keep Your Eyes Healthy
It takes at least 90 minutes to perform a comprehensive eye examination. The exam begins with a complete assessment of the patient’s current range of vision to determine if the patient needs any eyeglasses and the actual prescription needed. The eyes and eyelid area are then checked for proper function, abnormal lesions, infections or malpositions. Ocular motility and pupillary function are also checked. A complete assessment of the cornea, iris, and lens is performed including checking for conditions such as dry eyes, corneal lesions or abnormalities, glaucoma, and cataracts. The eyes are dilated and the eye is checked for optic nerve abnormalities, macular degeneration, or abnormalities of the vitreous humor and retina. The eyes will remain dilated for several hours so you will be sensitive to light and your up-close vision will be blurry. We recommend that you bring sunglasses to wear after the exam.
Regular eye examinations are one of the most important things you can do for your eye health. Without eye examinations, conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, retinal disorders, and infections can go unchecked and cause damage, sometimes severe, to your vision. At Balin Eye & Laser Center, we strive to keep our patients in their best eye health, offering routine eye exams in Northampton, Springfield, and the greater Western Massachusetts area. Those with great eye health and little or no refractive error will likely be asked to return for an eye exam every two years.
You may be asked to return yearly or more than once a year for an eye exam if you:
- Have a family history of eye disease
- Have a pre-existing eye disease or have had eye disease in the past
- Are diabetic, as you are at risk for diabetic retinopathy and other diseases
- Have high blood pressure
- Wear contact lenses
- Take any medications that may interfere with sight
It is extremely important to return for your appointments, especially if you have a family history of eye disease. These exams have the potential to save your sight. The Balin Eye Center has three convenient locations in Northampton and Springfield, MA.
